Chiropractor Dr David Cooper has become one of the first people in the country to be awarded the FIFA endorsed post-graduate diploma in football medicine.
This course lasted 12 months and covered topics from the assessment of cardiovascular risk factors to the nutritional demands of adolescent athletes.
The diploma builds on the skills that chiropractors use in every day practice, such as assessment of acute pain patients and interpretation of clinical imaging, contextualising these things with football performance at all levels.
While most of the forty-two modules built on the skills chiropractors use day to day, there were some new elements, such as pitch-side care and management of concussive symptoms.
The course has substantial elements of diagnosis and treatment of injuries, but, perhaps most interestingly, had significant emphasis towards improving performance. This covered training methods, nutritional optimisation and the use of manual therapy.
